India thrash Austria 7-3 in Olympic Qualifiers
The Indian Hockey Team has beaten Austria 7-3 at Santiago. Earlier they thrashed Russia 8-0. Good signs. It’s the same Indian team which played and won the Asian Games in Chennai. I had been to the matches then and loved to watch them play. I know that India is a strong team and want to see them playing at Beijing.
3 of the 12 teams for the Beijing Olympics are selected through these Olympic qualifier matches. New Zealand has already qualified in group-1. India is in group-2 and has 3 matches left against Mexico, Chile and Great Britain. The third and final qualifier group matches happen in the first week of April. More on the tournament format here.

i dont follow hockey so much..but am glad that there is a post on hockey and not on cricket

Though being our national sport, hockey seldom gets the attention that cricket gets and mostly goes unnoticed. Watching Carvalho’s men play and win the Asian games tournament here in Chennai refreshed my interest in the game. I love the energy in the current team. I admire the coach Carvalho in particular. The team has shaped well under him. Hope they make it to the Olympics. As for my sports orientation, I am enthusiastic about both games. There was a time when I used to sit and watch almost anything being telecast on DD Sports
